- A native plant of variable height, depending on the soil and height of grass. Good on heavy soils.
- Introduce as plug plants.
- Summer flowering, June-September.
- Produces 5cm across, reddish-purple, thistle-like flowers but with none of the associated prickles.
- Don’t mow until the plants have finished seeding. These will be feasted on by goldfinches.
- Expect the following butterflies to be attracted; Gatekeeper, Large Skipper, Meadow Brown, Painted Lady, Peacock, Red Admiral, Small Copper and Small Skipper.
